Bridging the Gap Between Technology, Operators, and Mission Success

Military Reality for Defense Tech: Forget the Screen and Understand the Mission Behind the Requirements

Course Overview

Military Reality for Defense Tech is a one-day, immersive program built for engineers, product leaders, and founders shaping capabilities for the U.S. military and national security ecosystem. Led by members of US Military Special Operations Forces (SOF) and Intelligence Community (IC), this course replaces assumptions and industry clichés with ground-truth understanding—how missions actually unfold, how requirements are born, and what it takes for technology to survive contact with the field.

Participants leave with a clearer view of the operational environment and a practical framework for building technology that aligns with real capability gaps—not buzzwords, pitch decks, or innovation theater.

What You’ll Learn

By the end of this course, participants will understand:

  • How missions are truly planned and executed—and where technology accelerates or obstructs real-world operations.

  • Why most “defense tech” misses the mark and how to design solutions grounded in authentic requirements.

  • The real difference between technologists, technical people, and technicians—and why warfighters are often the most technical actors in the entire chain.

  • How the current defense-innovation pipeline (accelerators, SBIR, venture capital) can drift into performance without impact unless anchored to operators.

  • A repeatable framework for genuine defense innovation, one that starts with capability gaps, brings operators back into the room, and measures success in deployments—not press releases.

Course Format

  • 8 hours of interactive instruction

  • A mix of lectures, operational vignettes, group discussions, and a capstone exercise

  • Held in person at the ARMIS International Classroom in Reston, VA

  • Limited class size to maximize discussion, access, and interaction

Pre-Work (Optional but Recommended)

  • Read The Defense Tech Mirage: Innovation Without the Warfighter (included upon registration)

  • Reflect on how your current work touches—or intends to touch—the warfighter

Who Should Attend

Ideal participants include:

  • Engineers and architects building defense or dual-use systems
  • Product managers, designers, and technical leaders in defense tech
  • Startup founders and early employees in national security companies
  • Innovation leads within primes, integrators, and consultancies
  • Investors seeking to pressure-test the true “warfighter connection” of their portfolios

Certification
